A barn-themed home in the Gallatin Valley
Local family creates a home with a barn theme with help of BKS Design and Build
When the owners of this extraordinary home in the Gallatin Valley were imagining their ideal home, they knew that it had to be a barn-style home set in an open Montana landscape.
The owner of this home grew up in Montana and chose BKS Design and Build to create a home for his family.
Giant Montana timbers accent the open great room, dining and kitchen space. Each timber was numbered to fit in perfect placement for flow from the interior to the exterior structure.
The owner grew up in Montana and had worked as a mason in the Gallatin Valley. His vision included a hands on approach, working alongside the builder to create a home for his family in the place of his roots.
BKS Design and Build was the perfect fit for his vision, since they were known for their very personalized approach to the building process. Brock Spain, owner of BKS Design and Build, was immediately impressed with the owner’s enthusiasm for family and skill for building. Some of his works on the home include the large barn doors that accent the hay loft style master bedroom, and the intricate masonry fireplace in the great room.
The four-bedroom-, three and a half bath-home was co-created in sketches and design details that Spain and the owners worked on together, interweaving the rustic and modern aspects of the home from design through construction. The final design incorporated the landscape into the feel of each room, allowing for maximum views and warmth from the open valley and mountain ranges.

In the great room, Distinctive Lighting in Bozeman collaborated on creating a unique chandelier that carries through the barn-style theme, with individual large clear glass bulbs hanging from the cross beam above the fireplace. The large kitchen is designed for entertaining, punctuated by an impressive eight foot by six foot granite island for gathering.
The white cabinets and grey/black countertops also carry through the clean, provincial feel. The main level floors are a rustic multi-colored grey and blond plank alongside plush grey carpet. Bridger Peak Flooring works alongside BKS Design and Build on all of their custom signature homes. They specialize in installation of wood flooring, vinyl and carpets. The finishes in the home were expertly completed by Artech, known for their fine-precision craftsmanship.
BKS Design and Build has built a reputation for their hands on custom work. “We start every design with a sketch, and that tends to be one of the most inspiring parts of the project,” says Spain. “Some clients even frame it, and display it on their wall for years to come.” BKS Design and Build continues to build a reputation for quality craftsmanship, custom and personalized design skills, and true Montana down to earth warmth with their clients.
