Montana's Beartooth highway opens May 25

One of Montana's greatest drives is over the Beartooth Highway in Red Lodge, Montana.

The Beartooth Highway closes each winter because of excessive snow and adverse winter conditions. Snow levels vary and drifts can be as high as 26 feet in the higher elevations.

Plowing has begun on the scenic highway, and Montana Department of Transportation says the road will open May 25, 2023.

The Beartooth Highway traverses the Montana/Wyoming border, where the National Park Service takes over maintenance responsibilities through Wyoming, in Yellowstone National Park.

The highway usually opens from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through mid September. The 2023 clearing is underway — see video.
