BOZEMAN — Montana State University’s College of Nursing graduate programs have been recognized on U.S. News and World Report’s 2018 list of the best graduate nursing schools.

MSU’s master’s-level nursing program tied for No. 115, while its doctor of nursing practice program tied for No. 88.
Inclusion on the list is evidence of the strength of MSU’s graduate nursing programs, said Helen Melland, dean of the college.
“We’re pleased to have U.S. News and World Report recognize our programs,” Melland said. “Our college’s mission is to enhance the health of the people of Montana, our nation and the global community by providing leadership for professional nursing through excellence in education, research, practice and service. These rankings indicate that we are meeting our goals.
“That our doctor of nursing practice program is recognized is particularly impressive, given that the program launched just a few years ago and the first group of students in the program graduated just last spring,” Melland added.
For the rankings, U.S. News surveyed the 532 nursing schools with master's or doctoral programs accredited in late summer 2016 by either the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

U.S. News then factored in data on reputation, faculty resources and more when ranking the top programs. Specifically, the publication noted that both the master's and doctoral rankings are based on a weighted average of 14 indicators, including indicators related to research activity, faculty credentials, the percentage of faculty members with important achievements and faculty participation in nursing practice.
The MSU College of Nursing is Montana's sole provider of graduate nursing education. It offers a rural-focused master of nursing clinical nurse leader program and a doctor of nursing practice program that prepares students for certification as family nurse practitioners and family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners.

The doctoral program was launched in 2013 and aims to help address Montana’s shortage of health care providers, particularly in rural areas. All MSU College of Nursing graduate classes are delivered using distance technologies, combined with face-to-face classes and on-site clinical supervision.
