A series of events including round dancing, story time and an exhibit of art by Native artists are scheduled on the Montana State University campus Oct. 10-13 in celebration of Indigenous People’s Day. All events are free and open to the public.

Last March, Bozeman Mayor Carson Taylor proclaimed the second Monday of each October a city holiday honoring indigenous peoples as an alternative to Columbus Day. In April 2016 the MSU’s University Council replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

The events begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, with the opening of an art exhibit in the Exit Gallery in the SUB. “Our Place before there was U.S.: Celebration of Indigenous People’s Day" includes works by Native American artists and MSU students Ben Pease, Casey Figueroa, Alisha Fisher, Tristyn Fleming, Stacey Herman, Kristie Rosette, Donelle Williams and Louis Still Smoking. The exhibit will be on display from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. through Oct. 28. The opening of the show and a reception featuring indigenous foods will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.

A round dance will be held at noon Oct. 10 on Centennial Mall, south of Montana Hall. A Native story time and book drive sponsored by Montana Racial Equity Project, Hopa Mountain, Country Bookshelf and the ACLU of Montana is set for 4 p.m. at Bozeman’s City Hall.

At 6 p.m. Walter Fleming, head of the MSU Native American Studies Department, will make a presentation about Indigenous People’s Day to the City Commission meeting at Bozeman’s City Hall, 121 North Rouse Avenue.

Presentations based on “Celebrating Diversity: Indigenous People’s Voices” will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Museum of the Rockies. Presenters will include Marsha Small, Indigenous Peoples Day local coordinator; Fleming; Taylor; and MSU Native students Pease, Francesca Rodriguez, Dalen Little Bird, Joaquin Rodriquez and Alyssa Noseep. Closing remarks will be by Jorge Quintana. A reception will follow sponsored by the Museum of the Rockies, the Extreme History Project and MSU.
