Finding Tranquility at Glacier Gateway Lodge

By Jenna Justice and Kambel Wyse

There is a quaint saying in Montana that we can experience all four seasons in a single day. Our late-June visit to Glacier Gateway Lodge proved that old saying true in spectacular fashion.

It rained.

And rained.

And rained some more.

Not the gentle, polite kind of rain. This was pouring rain. Waterfalls of rain. Sheets of rain that blurred the landscape into watercolor. Below us, Mother Nature quietly transformed the Flathead River as we watched beaches disappear beneath rising water, trees bend to the current, and familiar rock ledges vanish beneath newly formed waves.

Another saying came to mind—this one Scandinavian:

"There's no bad weather, just bad clothing."

Fortunately, Glacier Gateway Lodge makes it remarkably easy to embrace whatever weather Montana decides to deliver.

Perched high above several sweeping bends of the Flathead River near West Glacier, Montana, Glacier Gateway Lodge offers a wraparound deck with multiple seating areas that invite you to settle in and simply watch the world unfold. Whether you step outside from one of the home's many entrances or wander onto the deck from inside, every seat seems designed for quiet contemplation.

The storm didn't limit our visit.

It transformed it.

Wrapped in clouds and the rhythmic sound of rain, we found ourselves slowing down, breathing deeper, and appreciating the kind of tranquility that has become increasingly rare.

That isn't to say there wasn't plenty to do.

Have you ever melted into a steaming hot tub while rain pours down only a few feet away? It feels almost magical.

Or stepped from a fragrant cedar sauna into cool mountain rain? The exhilarating contrast is unforgettable and somehow makes you feel wonderfully alive.

A Home Designed for Gathering

The home's octagonal design immediately catches your attention. The unique architecture creates unexpected wall angles, cozy alcoves, and inviting gathering spaces that feel both spacious and intimate.

With six generously sized bedrooms — most furnished with king-sized beds and each equipped with a large television — there is plenty of room for families, multiple couples, or groups of friends traveling together.

The kitchen is equally impressive. Fully equipped and thoughtfully arranged, its distinctive layout allows several cooks to work together without constantly bumping elbows. Whether you're preparing a holiday meal or simply making pancakes before a day of adventure, the kitchen encourages conversation as much as cooking.

Meals can be enjoyed in the warm, spacious dining room, outside on one of several dining areas overlooking the river, or beside the wood-pellet barbecue on the front porch.

Throughout the home you'll discover countless places to curl up with a good book, gather around a television, enjoy conversation, or simply watch the ever-changing Montana landscape unfold beyond the windows.

Where Competition Meets Nostalgia

Downstairs, the recreation room brought out everyone's playful side.

A nearly full-sized Pac-Man arcade game instantly transported us back to the 1980s, while Big Buck Hunter sparked more than a few friendly rivalries. The tabletop shuffleboard quickly became another favorite, with equal parts competition and laughter filling the room.

The lower level also includes four bedrooms, a comfortable family room centered around a large television, a fully equipped laundry room, and convenient access to the back patio.

Owner Steve Goldsby tells us, "We didn't set out to have the biggest place near Glacier — we set out to have the one a whole family actually fits in. Three generations under one roof, fifteen minutes from the West Entrance, with the Flathead in your ears and the mountains out every window. The park fills your days; the lodge is where the days get retold."

The View Everyone Will Remember

The back patio may become your favorite gathering place.

Tucked beneath the upper deck, it features the inviting hot tub, a generous seating area filled with comfortable Adirondack chairs, and a propane fire table that practically begs for evening conversation.

All of it overlooks the winding Flathead River as it snakes toward Flathead Lake and the mountains beyond.

Horseshoe pits provide another opportunity for outdoor fun, although guests should remember that this is authentic Montana. Wildlife frequently passes through the property, and the riverbank drops away rather dramatically, so a healthy respect for nature is always appropriate.

Movie Night, Montana Style

One of the property's biggest surprises sits just outside the main house.

A separate theater building houses an impressive entertainment room featuring multiple reclining theater seats facing an 85-inch television.

Movie nights —and game days— feel elevated here. A wet bar, secondary television, refrigerator, and wine chiller ensure no one misses a play while grabbing refreshments.

Honestly, it's difficult to imagine a better date night than watching a favorite movie while listening to rain dance across the roof overhead.

Explore the Canyon and the art of Michael Booth

As comfortable as Glacier Gateway Lodge is, you'll also want to spend time exploring nearby West Glacier, Hungry Horse, Martin City, and Coram — communities collectively known by locals simply as "The Canyon."

Literally next door sits one of the area's hidden artistic treasures: the Gallery of artist Michael G. Booth.

Booth is a master across an astonishing range of artistic disciplines. His work includes bronze, fiberglass, and stone sculpture, oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, pottery and intricate woodcarving. Visitors are immediately welcomed by beautifully carved bas-relief panels that adorn the entrance to his Quonset-style gallery and studio.

One particularly captivating collection features multiple canvases layered together, guiding the viewer's eye from abstract forms around the edges toward striking realism at the center.

The gallery itself is every bit as impressive as the artwork it contains. Built over countless hours as a true labor of love, the space rewards careful observation with intricate handcrafted details woven throughout the interior and exterior. If you're fortunate, you'll also have the opportunity to meet Michael himself.

It's a stop that deserves a place on every Glacier Country itinerary.

An Insider's Secret

If you'd like to customize your Glacier experience, Glacier Gateway Lodge highly recommends the (exclusive to Glacier Gateway guests) concierge services of Pete "Doc" Clancy.

Whether you're interested in personalized Glacier National Park itineraries, guided hikes, private rafting experiences, gourmet meal preparation, huckleberry picking, winter adventures, or discovering hidden local gems, Doc's local knowledge is exceptional.

We had the opportunity to spend time with him during our visit and found him to be knowledgeable, personable, and genuinely passionate about helping visitors experience the very best of Northwest Montana.

Thoughtful Details

One feature we particularly appreciated was the home's exceptionally organized guest manual. Every switch, code, appliance, gadget, remote, and amenity is clearly explained, making it easy to settle in quickly and simply enjoy your stay.

It's one more thoughtful touch in a home that seems designed around anticipating guests' needs.

Glacier Gateway Lodge somehow manages to balance rustic Montana charm with refined comfort. It is elegant without feeling formal. Luxurious without being pretentious. Spacious enough for a large gathering while still offering countless quiet corners for solitude.

Goldsby is proud of the experience they are able to create. “Our guests value quality, thoughtful design, exceptional communication, and memorable experiences," he said. "They tend to appreciate the little details and enjoy making lasting memories with the people they're traveling with.”

Even though our visit was wrapped in clouds and rain, we never once wished for sunshine.

Sometimes Montana gives you bluebird skies.

Sometimes it gives you an unforgettable storm.

At Glacier Gateway Lodge, you'll discover that either one makes for an extraordinary getaway.
