Wolf hunting season draws to close
February 15, 2012

Wolves are out of hunters' crosshairs for a while.
Montana's wolf-hunting season closes Wednesday after hunters were able to kill 16 wolves out of the 220-wolf quota.
Montana's Fish, Wildlife and Parks commission may extend the season in the Bitterroot Valley near the Idaho border, where elk populations have dwindled. But for most of Montana the season ends after sunset Wednesday. The 163 wolves killed through Tuesday equals almost 75 percent of the statewide quota. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission chairman Bob Ream says next year's season could be adjusted to loosen hunting restrictions in some areas.
In Idaho, trappers and hunters killed 294 wolves in their season, which runs through June.
