Of the millions of photographs seen in newspapers each year, the two Pulitzer Prizes for Photography are the most coveted. It is given for breaking news and the other for feature photography. Capture the Moment ranges from the winning images of 1942, the year of the first photography award, to 2011. Other iconic images include Joe Rosenthal’s 1945 winning photograph of the American flag raising at Iwo Jima and the 2003 photograph of Colorado’s raging fires. The massive 20-by-30 inch and 30-by-40 inch prints of the winning photographs are organized chronologically in the gallery. The large format pictures will stop visitors in their tracks and inspire emotional reflection on real events of the past and present. Publisher Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911), in his will of 1904, conceived the Pulitzer Prize. Pulitzer left a $2 million endowment to Columbia University to establish both a school of journalism and the Pulitzer Prize, which recognizes excellence in newspaper journalism, books, music and drama. Over the years the categories have been modified by the Pulitzer Board, which added a prize for photography in 1939 with the first award presented in 1942. The photography category expanded to two awards in 1968, one for spot or breaking news and one for features. The winning photographs are presented in both black & white and color, and may consist of one image, a sequence or an album of no more than 20 photographs of a given subject. Computer manipulation of photographs is prohibited. In addition to the coveted distinction, the Pulitzer Prize winners receive a $10,000 cash award. The exhibit catalog, Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs features the photographers’ first-hand accounts of capturing the prize-winning images. The catalog was co-edited by exhibition curator Cyma Rubin and Eric Newton, former news historian at Newseum. Rubin has produced and directed the riveting documentary, Moment of Impact: Stories of the Pulitzer Prize Photographs.
