Montana highway program targets children safety September 19, 2011 Editor@montanaliving.com
HELENA - The Montana Department of Transportation is joining with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and communities across Montana to commemorate Child Passenger Safety Week from September 18th through 24th. In Montana between 2006 and 2010 there were over 1500 children ages 8 and under that were injured in motor vehicle crashes, 20 of those were fatalities. MDT is urging everyone to properly secure children in child safety seats or booster seats, every trip – every time. When it comes to the safety of a child, there is no room for mistakes. Certified child passenger safety technicians in Montana are available to assist you with installing your child’s car seat correctly. Some counties have local inspection stations with certified technicians that you can also visit. Please go to our website at http://www.buckleup.mt.gov/children/installation.shtml to find the nearest inspection station and certified technician near you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/ recently released updated car seat recommendations for children through age 12. The recommendations emphasize how important it is to keep children in each restraint type for as long as possible before moving them to the next type. For maximum child passenger safety, parents and caregivers should visit their nearest certified technician to ensure their children’s car seats are used properly: Remember: Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size, and choose a seat that fits in your vehicle and use it every time. Always refer to your specific car seat manufacturer’s instructions; read the vehicle owner’s manual on how to install the car seat using the seat belt or LATCH system; and check height and weight limits. To maximize safety, keep your child in the car seat for as long as possible, as long as the child fits within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements. |
