20-year-old grizzly captured and killed in Swan Valley September 28, 2011 editor@montanaliving.com
A large adult male grizzly was captured and killed Sept. 27 in Condon after it had broken into nine garages and sheds in the Swan Valley over the past two weeks. Remote camera images confirmed that this was the bear that had broken into the structures. The grizzly was originally captured by Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Bear Managers on the Flathead Indian Reservation in July 2010. It was released within the reservation. The grizzly traveled over the Mission Range into the Swan Valley and dropped its radio collar. The 600-pound grizzly was 20+ years old, according to Grizzly Bear Management Specialist Tim Manley. The bear had a number of teeth that were worn down to the gums. “This bear was removed in the interest of human safety,” says FWP Region One Wildlife Manager Jim Williams. “It’s an unfortunate but necessary response for a grizzly that has become food conditioned and potentially dangerous to the public.” |
