Looking to the East — veterinarian uses acupuncture to heal pets

Hoping to find treatments for animals not common in Western practices, veterinarian Barbara Calm began exploring alternatives. She found herself looking to Eastern medicine and acupuncture. This Chinese form of healing has been around for hundreds of years, but only in the last decade, as pet owners look to more holistic forms of healing, has it been adapted for animals. Acupuncture is based on the body having "Qi," or energy flow, which moves through a body's channels, or meridians. This energy flow is sometimes disrupted by illness or injury, and acupuncture helps restore balance by using tiny needles embedded in the skin. These needles bring blood flow and an endorphin release to a certain area.
