| Hong Kong dragon boats to race on Flathead Lake
Montana’s first dragon boat race is set for September 8, 2012, on Flathead Lake. For the event, all teams will race in the Hong Kong-style, 46-foot dragon boats. Each boat holds a team of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer. All ages, abilities and physiques are welcome, which makes the competition hinge upon teamwork and paddling style rather than brute strength. |

| Wild Prairie Dancers: Montana's sage grouse
By Deborah RIchie Oberbillig Today, there’s new hope for this iconic sage grouse, despite declines so drastic that the greater sage grouse qualifies for listing as an endangered species. The population has slipped from millions in presettlement days to about 200,000 as habitat is degraded, developed for houses, or lost to oil and gas development. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision not to list the species provides a window of opportunity to avoid a listing altogether through voluntary conservation. |

| Black Bears: the unsung bear of Montana
Mention the word “bear” in a dinner conversation and chances are overwhelming that you will get a wide variety of responses from those present. Some will immediately think of a fierce powerful creature with a bad temper that attacks humans with little or no provocation. Still others may conjure up an almost-human character like Yogi the bear or the bears they observed in the zoo - romping, wrestling, whining and even taking a few shuffling steps while standing erect. |

| Six grizzly bears killed as human conflicts increase
Six grizzly bears were captured and removed from the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem in two separate incidents over the past 10 days in northwest Montana. According to Grizzly Bear Management Specialist Tim Manley, the grizzlies, two adult females and four cubs, were captured and removed due to repeated conflicts and in the interest of human safety. The two adult females were captured and euthanized, while managers will try to locate a zoo to take the four cubs. |

| Smooth Moves: Montana Boat Builders puts flow into its drift boats
Great curves, smooth moves, inner strength and pure class are tough find - but Jason Cajune can show you right where to look. Since 1996 Cajune's company - Montana Boat Builders - has revolutionized the boat-building business in Montana and around the world. That's a big feat for a guy who grew up in a state that's mostly solid ground. Cajune started working with old wooden boats as a kid, and a livelihood building boats followed. |

| Summer in the High Country
If taking a trip in Montana's spectacular backcountry is your dream, it's time to stop making excuses. Wilderness travel isn't just for the young, rugged adventure-seekers who own their own horse pack string and equipment. With Montana's world-class outfitters even the most urbanized dreamers can enjoy a memorable trip into the high country. Many consider a back country adventure too daunting to tackle on their own. Before I ever took my own horses into the wilderness, I joined Karen and Jack Hooker of WTR Outfitters in Ovando on a seven-day trip across the Bob Marshall Wilderness. |

| Captain of Knowledge: Bob Orsua's science of fishing Flathead Lake
There are those who go fishing. And there are those who fish. For Bob Orsua, the distinction is great. He chose to make his living as a professional fishing guide nearly 20 years ago, and has spent the last eight years as a guide for Mofisch charters, a guide service in northwest Montana, focusing on Flathead Lake, Whitefish Lake and Lake Koocanusa. When Orsua decided to become a professional guide, he immersed himself in the biology, methods and technology that would make him successful on Flathead Lake. |

| Fish TV: Peering into the depths of Duck Lake
BY DAVE REESE The night’s blizzard has left four inches of windblown snow in patches along U.S. Highway 2 and it’s white-knuckle driving from Essex to Summit. Our truck crawls down the east side of the pass toward Browning, and strong winds push our truck at will, but on this day we won’t be deterred from a weekend of watching Fish TV. There’s a great outdoors show that puts you close to the action, and you don’t even have to leave your house to watch it. Ok, well you don’t have to leave your “ice” house. |
